Cycle Across Oz

Itinerary and Terrain

This is a Western Australian trip and we will spend 29 days on the road before we reach Perth. The route is set out in 5 sections and takes us from Broome to Cossack (The Pilbara 832 kms); from Cossack to Coral Bay (The Ningaloo 567 kms); from Coral Bay to Carnarvon (The Fruit Bowl 234 kms); Carnarvon to Kalbarri (Shark Bay 718kms with a rest day after 334 kms too); and from Kalbarri to Perth (The Coral Coast 596 kms). Terrain is not arduous with no climbing of any note - total climbing for the whole trip is a little over 2,000 metres (what many of us do in a single 100 mile training ride). Past trips have shown that headwinds can prove to be a challenge - however at this time of year we are expecting to cycle with the prevailing easterlies/north easterlies for the first two weeks or so. The last two weeks we could be faced with south westerlies, though we are not expecting them to be too strong and we have shortened the distances for some days to account for them. Detailed printable itinerary can be found here. Or you can have a look at a plotted map here and download a file mappable into your favourite GPS and mapping software.

Weather
Stunning sunsets

We will leave Broome with the temperatures in the mid 30s (mid 80s F) and should see daytime temperatures drop steadily as we head South and West. By the time we reach the halfway mark around Carnarvon, daytime temperatures will reach the high 20s (mid 70s F).  The further south we go, the closer we will get to the low 20s C (low 70s F). Night time temperatures will range from high 10s C (mid 60s F) in the north and will become a bit cooler in the south. Closer to Perth, we may need a a good sleeping bag, a fleece, a woolen hat and maybe some gloves. Wind patterns for the first part of the trip are generally from the East and the South East especially in the mornings and swinging a bit more South West further south and in the afternoons. Winds can be quite strong between Port Hedland and Karratha (especially in the afternoons).
